Itchy eyelids are one of those symptoms that seem minor until they become constant. Persistent, recurring eyelid itching can be a sign of several underlying conditions, some of which worsen significantly if left untreated.
The Most Common Causes of Itchy Eyelids
Seasonal and Environmental Allergies
This is the most common cause of itchy eyelids in New York City — particularly in spring when tree pollen counts spike, and in fall when ragweed saturates the air. Allergic conjunctivitis causes itching, redness, tearing, and a burning sensation in both eyes simultaneously. It is not contagious.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins — the area where your eyelashes grow. Symptoms include itching, crusting along the lash margins especially in the morning, a gritty sensation, and mild eyelid swelling. It is one of the most common eye conditions in adults and requires consistent eyelid hygiene to manage.
Demodex Mites
Demodex mites inhabit the hair follicles of eyelashes. Overpopulation causes persistent itching, particularly intense at night. A prescription treatment called Xdemvy was FDA-approved in 2023 specifically for Demodex blepharitis.
Contact Dermatitis
The skin of the eyelid is among the thinnest on the human body, making it highly reactive to irritants. Reactions to eye makeup, mascara, contact lens solutions, and face wash are common causes of localized eyelid itching.
Dry Eye Disease
Dry eyes frequently cause itching — a burning, gritty itch that is worst at the end of the day, in air-conditioned spaces, or during screen-heavy work.
What Not to Do
- Do not rub your eyes — rubbing releases more histamine and intensifies allergic itching
- Do not use vasoconstrictive “get-the-red-out” drops — they cause rebound redness
- Do not assume it is allergies without ruling out blepharitis or dry eye
When to See an Eye Doctor
Make an appointment if your symptoms have persisted for more than two weeks, you have significant eyelid swelling, your vision is affected, you are experiencing pain beyond itching, or over-the-counter remedies are not providing relief.
