Harlem Eye Care provides comprehensive eye examinations, contact lens services, prescription eyewear and optical services, plus evaluation and management of a range of eye conditions.

Optometry, ophthalmology and optical sit in the same practice, so testing, diagnosis and eyewear can follow on from one another instead of requiring separate appointments in separate offices.

A comprehensive eye exam evaluates both your vision and the overall health of your eyes.

Testing typically includes determining your prescription and examining structures such as the cornea, lens, retina and optic nerve. Depending on your history and what the examination finds, your eye doctor may add further testing.

Not every patient needs the same schedule — your eye doctor will recommend how often to return.

That recommendation is based on your age, prescription, eye health, family history, medical conditions such as diabetes, and what previous examinations found. Some patients are seen annually; others are asked to come back sooner or later than that.

A vision screening checks whether you can see clearly at certain distances. A comprehensive eye examination is far more extensive.

Screenings — at school, at work, at the DMV — are designed to flag obvious problems, not to rule out disease. A full examination evaluates your prescription, how your eyes function together, and the health of the eye itself. Passing a screening does not mean your eyes have been examined.

Changes in vision, persistent blur, eye pain, redness, light sensitivity, frequent headaches, flashes, new floaters or difficulty seeing at night all warrant an examination.

Sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow across your field of view, a sudden shower of floaters, or eye pain with nausea may require immediate medical attention rather than a scheduled appointment.

Yes. A contact lens evaluation determines the right prescription, lens type and fit for your eyes.

If you already wear lenses but deal with dryness, irritation or lenses that shift through the day, your doctor can evaluate the fit and the surface of the eye and suggest a different material, replacement schedule or design. Contact lens prescriptions are separate from glasses prescriptions.

Yes. If your examination produces a new prescription, you can go straight to the optical team.

They will walk you through frames and lens options suited to your prescription and visual needs. You are also welcome to use a valid prescription written elsewhere.

Lens choice depends on your prescription, the distances you work at, and how you spend your day — not just on the frame.

Lens design, material, coatings and how the frame sits on your face all affect comfort. A prescription that works beautifully in a small frame can feel very different in a large one, which is why fit is measured rather than estimated.

Yes. Harlem Eye Care provides care for patients with keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea progressively thins and changes shape.

It often first appears as vision that will not sharpen with glasses and a prescription that keeps changing. Because every case progresses differently, an eye doctor should evaluate the cornea directly and recommend the appropriate monitoring or treatment approach, which may include specialty contact lenses.

Yes. Glaucoma can progress without any noticeable symptoms, particularly in its earlier stages.

Vision loss from glaucoma typically starts in the periphery, where the brain compensates so effectively that patients rarely notice. This is why routine examinations matter: your eye doctor looks for signs and risk factors that call for further testing or ongoing monitoring, before you would have any reason to book an appointment yourself.

Yes. Diabetes causes changes to the blood vessels of the retina, which are visible during a dilated eye examination.

A diabetic eye examination allows your eye doctor to evaluate the retina for diabetic retinopathy and other diabetes-related changes. The retina is the one place in the body where blood vessels can be examined directly, which is why these findings sometimes appear before a patient notices any change in vision.

Yes. Dry eye evaluation and management is part of the care offered at the practice.

Symptoms include burning, irritation, redness, watering, a gritty sensation, or vision that fluctuates through the day. Because dry eye has several different causes, your eye doctor evaluates what is driving your symptoms before recommending a treatment plan.

Eyepic accepts many major vision plans and health insurance plans.

A routine exam for glasses or contacts is usually covered by a vision plan, while a medical eye exam — glaucoma monitoring, diabetic evaluation, dry eye, an eye infection — is billed to medical insurance. Coverage varies by plan and by service, so contacting the Harlem office before your appointment is the reliable way to verify your individual benefits.

The practice sits on the Second Avenue corridor in East Harlem and serves patients throughout Harlem and the surrounding Manhattan neighborhoods.
