Harlem Eye Care: Comprehensive Eye Exams and Eyewear in East Harlem

Harlem Eye Care is Eyepic’s Manhattan practice, located at 2249 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10029, in the heart of East Harlem. It serves a neighborhood that has long been underserved by specialty medicine — and eye care is one of the clearest examples of what that gap costs.

Why regular eye exams matter especially here

Two of the most serious eye diseases in the United States are effectively silent in their early stages, and both disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic communities.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually without pain and without noticeable symptoms, until peripheral vision has already been permanently lost. It cannot be reversed. It can, however, be slowed dramatically when caught early — which requires an exam, not a symptom.

Diabetic retinopathy develops when high blood sugar damages the small blood vessels of the retina. Vision can remain sharp while significant damage accumulates. Anyone living with diabetes should have a dilated retinal exam every year, without exception.

Neither of these is a reason for alarm. Both are a reason for a calendar reminder.

What Harlem Eye Care offers

Eyepic’s model puts ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians in the same practice. That means:

  • Comprehensive eye exams — vision, eye pressure, and a full health evaluation of the retina and optic nerve
  • Glaucoma screening and management
  • Diabetic eye exams, including dilated retinal evaluation
  • Cataract evaluation and surgical consultation
  • Dry eye diagnosis and treatment, matched to which tear layer is actually failing
  • Contact lens exams and fittings
  • Children’s eye exams, age 7 and up
  • Optical services and designer frames, fitted on site

If a routine exam finds something medical, the specialist is down the hall — not across town, six weeks from now.

Getting there

2249 2nd Ave sits near the corner of East 115th Street, walkable from most of El Barrio and convenient to Central Harlem, Yorkville, and the Upper East Side. The 4, 5, and 6 lines at 116th Street are a short walk, and the M15 runs directly along Second Avenue.

Insurance

Eyepic accepts a broad range of vision and medical insurance plans. One thing worth knowing before you book: a routine exam for glasses is generally covered by a vision plan, while a medical eye exam — for diabetes, glaucoma, dry eye, or an infection — is usually billed to your health insurance. These are different benefits, and having one does not mean you lack the other. Call the office and staff can verify what your plan covers.

See the insurances page for details.

What should I bring to my first appointment? Current glasses or contact lens boxes, a medication list, your insurance card, and sunglasses in case you are dilated.
