When Eye Exams Are Genuinely Free or Effectively Free
With Vision Insurance
If you have vision insurance through your employer, the healthcare marketplace, or a union benefit, your annual comprehensive eye exam is typically covered at 100 percent when you see an in-network provider. Common vision plans in NYC include VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, and Superior Vision.
With Medicaid
Eligible New Yorkers on Medicaid receive one comprehensive eye exam per year at no cost when they see an in-network provider. If you have Medicaid through MetroPlus, Healthfirst, or Fidelis, call your insurer to find an in-network optometrist and confirm your benefits before booking.
With an FSA or HSA
