One of the most frequent questions from new patients is some version of: should I see an optometrist or an ophthalmologist? Most people are unclear on the distinction — and that is completely reasonable.
What Is an Optometrist?
An optometrist (OD — Doctor of Optometry) is a primary eye care provider who has completed a four-year optometry school program. They are licensed to perform comprehensive eye exams, diagnose and manage refractive errors, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, diagnose and manage many eye diseases including glaucoma and dry eye, and in New York State, prescribe a broad range of therapeutic eye medications. Optometrists are not medical doctors and do not perform surgery, but they handle the vast majority of eye care needs seen in primary care settings.
What Is an Ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist (MD or DO) is a physician who completed four years of medical school, a one-year internship, and a minimum three-year residency in ophthalmology. They can perform all the clinical functions of an optometrist, with the additional capabilities that come from a full medical education and surgical training. Ophthalmologists are uniquely qualified to perform eye surgery — including cataract removal, LASIK, retinal repair, and glaucoma surgery.
Who Should You See For Which Conditions?
- Annual eye exam and prescription: Optometrist
- Dry eye, allergies, pink eye: Optometrist
- Glaucoma screening and early management: Optometrist (co-management with ophthalmologist for advanced cases)
- Diabetic eye exam: Optometrist (with co-management as needed)
- Cataracts: Ophthalmologist for surgical evaluation
- Sudden vision loss or eye injury: Ophthalmologist — emergency
- Retinal conditions: Ophthalmologist, specifically a retinal specialist
- Floaters, flashes, or sudden visual field changes: Urgent ophthalmology evaluation
