Blue Light Glasses and Lens Coatings: What’s Worth Paying For
Walk into any optical and you will be offered a menu of lens upgrades, each with a persuasive name and a price. Some of them meaningfully improve your daily experience. At least one of them is oversold.
Here is the honest version.
Blue light filtering: the uncomfortable evidence
Blue light glasses are marketed on two claims: they reduce digital eye strain, and they protect the retina from screen-emitted blue light.
The second claim has essentially no support. The amount of blue light emitted by a phone or monitor is a small fraction of what you receive from ordinary daylight. Sunlight is overwhelmingly the dominant source of blue light in any normal life, and no credible body has established that screen-level blue light causes retinal damage.
The first claim is weak. Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have found little to no benefit from blue-light-filtering lenses for symptoms of digital eye strain compared with standard lenses.
So what actually causes tired eyes at a computer?
- Reduced blink rate. Screen use cuts blinking roughly in half, and produces more incomplete blinks. This destabilizes the tear film.
- Sustained accommodation. Holding focus at one near distance for hours fatigues the focusing system.
- Uncorrected refractive error, including small amounts of astigmatism or farsightedness that never bothered you before a desk job.
- Poor ergonomics. Monitor too high, too close, or backlit by a window.
If your eyes hurt at the end of a workday, a blue light filter is treating none of those things. An eye exam is.
One genuine exception: blue light in the evening does suppress melatonin and affect circadian rhythm. If you are using screens at night, blocking blue light — via lenses, device night mode, or simply not using screens in bed — has a defensible rationale for sleep, not for eye health.
Anti-reflective coating: buy it
This one is worth the money.
An AR coating eliminates reflections off the front and back surfaces of the lens. That means:
- More light reaching your eye, so better contrast
- Dramatically less glare from headlights when night driving
- Fewer distracting reflections from overhead office lighting
- People can actually see your eyes rather than two glowing rectangles
For anyone driving at night or working under fluorescent light, AR coating is the single highest-value lens upgrade available. Better AR coatings also include oleophobic and hydrophobic layers, which keep the lens cleanable.
High-index materials: depends on your prescription
Standard plastic lenses are fine for mild prescriptions. As prescriptions strengthen, lenses get thick — at the edge for nearsightedness, at the center for farsightedness.
High-index materials bend light more efficiently, allowing thinner lenses for the same power. If your prescription is strong, this is not vanity; thick lenses are heavy, uncomfortable, and distort peripherally.
If your prescription is mild, you are paying for a difference you will not perceive.
Polycarbonate and Trivex are worth mentioning separately: they are impact-resistant and should be the default for children, athletes, and anyone with functional vision in only one eye.
Photochromic lenses
Lenses that darken in sunlight. Convenient, and they provide UV protection outdoors.
Two caveats. Most photochromic lenses activate in response to UV, and car windshields block UV — so they do not darken meaningfully while driving, unless you buy a version specifically designed to. And they are slow to clear when you come indoors.
Progressive lenses
Not a coating, but the upgrade with the widest quality range. Cheap progressives have narrow corridors and significant peripheral distortion. Premium designs, properly measured, are noticeably better. If you are entering presbyopia, this is a place where paying more usually buys something real — provided the measurements are taken carefully.
What to actually ask your optician
1. Does my prescription need a high-index material, or am I paying for nothing? 2. What AR coating is included, and what is the warranty? 3. Do I drive at night? (Say yes if you do.) 4. Do I need impact resistance? 5. What is your remake policy if I cannot adapt to these lenses?
A good optician will talk you out of things.
